I like reading and writing poetry. Reading poetry frequently is one of the best ways to get inspiration for writing it. I have a long doc of poetry I like but I didn't want to copy them all in here, so I picked my favorite poets and my favorite poems of theirs for the first section, And then added my favorite poems by theme in the second section. There are some repeats in the two sections, but there were some themes that didn't crop up enough times to make a whole category for them.

Most of my favorites are classics from literature and poetry classes I took in college; I've been collecting more contemporary poetry lately but don't yet have them in my top favorites since I'm not as familiar with them. I've also recently gotten into classical Chinese poetry, because one day I was feeling frustrated that I felt like I couldn't understand them well and ended up doing a lot of research over a few weeks on their history, forms, etc. and have now been going through an anthology and applying what I've learned. Most of my research has been on Wikipedia and some other random websites; I recommend starting with this Substack post.

Favorite Poems (Thematic)

America

When I was finding themes I was a little surprised to multiple I like that are about the US/America. As an anarchist I am not at all patriotic, but I feel a strong connection to the land and imagined community of the US. Most of these speak to that tension of this love that I think we (naturally? or are taught to have?) for our country and criticism of it. So they could go in "politics" but I just felt like making it its own category.

Beauty

There's some overlap here with "Nature," but I grouped these together because I feel like they're primarily about beauty, especially finding beauty in imperfection, more so than being about nature.

Many poems on grief deal with the intense emotions soon after someone's death, but this one on the way grief and memory changes as time goes on really speaks to me now as I deal with emotions around my mom dying several years ago. I love the line "I have not often thought of her, but neither can I forget.""

Dreaming of My Deceased Wife on the Night of the 20th Day of the First Month

Ten boundless years now separate the living and the dead,
I have not often thought of her, but neither can I forget.
Her lonely grave is a thousand li distant, I can't say where my wife lies cold.
We could not recognise each other even if we met again,

I Promise You

there’s nothing in my face. There is nothing in yours. What we have are called heads. They are nothing unless we kiss. Lips are wonderful. They are full of mechanoreceptors. Aubade

with mean footprints and dog shit.

Notes: I feel like every poet has to do an aubade at some point.

Martyr

I was taught to love as they do in heaven.
I was taught this flotsam life
is only worth the mob and lions.

So crucify me, head over heels,
as I lock arms with burning lungs:
a brick in a wall crumbling.

Watch my head bounce three times
once you cleave it from my body.
The balaclava slips to show my teeth.

Separate my skin from my flesh;
peel me like an orange and roast
me with your tiki torches.

Train me as a soldier for His army—
then wonder why I seek to die for glory?

Waiting for the Cock to Crow

O Simon Peter I am you, crouched by this trashcan fire
that is making my eyes water,
praying to be anywhere but here but I can’t leave
until what I know will happen, happens.

look for a resting place for your styrofoam coffee cup
while the Romans beat at the barricade?

Notes: I wanted to write something about what it's like waiting for something terrible to happen, and connected Peter sitting at a fire on the night Jesus was arrested with a time when I was with other community defense comrades at a homeless camp. People had made a huge barricade around the camp, and we were sitting around a fire before dawn waiting for the police to come.
